Meet the Brand: MYSTIKUM

Mystikum is more than a revival of an iconic perfume—it is a tribute to modern individuality, timeless elegance, and the enduring artistry of fine fragrance. While its roots lie in the glamour and innovation of the 1920s, Mystikum resonates today with a new generation that values authenticity, creativity, and sophisticated self-expression.

Perfume in the Roaring Twenties

The 1920s—often referred to as Les Années Folles or the Roaring Twenties—marked a transformative era in the history of perfumery. Emerging from the aftermath of World War I, the decade was defined by cultural revolution, technological progress, and an unprecedented sense of personal freedom. Perfume evolved from an exclusive luxury reserved for the elite into a powerful expression of modern identity. The fragrances of the era embodied freedom, glamour, and experimentation.

This remarkable decade gave rise to legendary creations that continue to shape the fragrance industry today. Chanel No. 5 challenged the romantic floral conventions of the 19th century with an abstract composition enhanced by synthetic notes, while Shalimar introduced the richness and sensuality of oriental perfumery. Joy became a symbol of uncompromising luxury during a period of economic uncertainty.

Against this vibrant backdrop, perfume became intertwined with art, fashion, and culture. Fragrance houses collaborated with glassmakers, couturiers, and artists, transforming perfume into an artistic medium as evocative as a painting or a musical composition. It was within this creative renaissance that the story of Mystikum began.

The Origins of Mystikum

Parfumerie Scherk was founded in 1906 by Ludwig Scherk, a pharmacist with a keen entrepreneurial vision and a passion for innovation. Based in Berlin, Scherk established laboratories dedicated to creating high-quality perfumes and cosmetics, emphasizing purity, elegance, and refined design.

In 1910, the house introduced Mystikum—a fragrance that would reach its peak popularity during the 1920s. More than a perfume, Mystikum was a complete beauty collection featuring eau de toilette, powder, soap, and skincare products. Each item was presented in beautifully crafted bottles and boxes worthy of the sophisticated salons of Berlin’s artistic elite.

By the 1920s, Mystikum had become one of Germany’s most celebrated fragrances and achieved international success, particularly in the United States, where it was praised as “the finest perfume in the world.”

Following Ludwig Scherk’s death, the company passed to his son Fritz Scherk. Although he continued the business, the brand never fully regained its pre-war international prestige. In 1969, the rights were sold to Alberto-Culver, and over time the Scherk name gradually faded from the collective memory of the perfume world.

Mystikum Today

In recent years, Mystikum has experienced a remarkable renaissance. Perfume historians and collectors began uncovering original bottles, studying archival materials, and piecing together the forgotten legacy of a fragrance that once held a prominent place in European perfume history.

In 2024, the Mystikum trademark was re-registered and entrusted to an independent perfume house dedicated to preserving and reinterpreting historical fragrances for contemporary audiences.

Modern Mystikum creations, including Moonlight Ceremony and Tears on Mystic Sands, remain faithful to the brand’s original DNA: opulent, mysterious, and subtly spiritual. Inspired by the elegance of the Art Deco era, the new bottles pay homage to the 1920s while embracing contemporary craftsmanship and precision.

Produced in limited quantities using premium ingredients, each fragrance is accompanied by a deeper philosophical narrative that reflects the original ethos of the house—where perfume is not merely worn, but experienced.

The Art Deco Bottle

The original Mystikum bottle designs, created during the 1920s, reflected the aesthetic ideals of the Art Deco movement. Crafted by skilled artisans from the renowned Alsatian glassmaking region, the bottles featured compact proportions, geometric balance, and softly opalescent glass that diffused light with remarkable subtlety—a visual metaphor for the hidden mysteries contained within each fragrance.

Every bottle carried a distinctive symbol inspired by alchemical or astrological imagery, engraved or applied in tin or copper. There were no labels and no prominent logos—only the symbol itself, inviting personal interpretation and discovery.

For the modern relaunch, this tradition has been thoughtfully preserved while adapting it to contemporary design sensibilities. The bottle embodies the values at the heart of the house: understated elegance, mystery, and timelessness. There is no excess, no unnecessary ornamentation, and no demand for attention—only purpose, craftsmanship, and meaning.

The bottle invites touch. It encourages contemplation. It asks the wearer to slow down.

In a world increasingly defined by speed and distraction, a Mystikum bottle serves as an anchor—an object that refuses to rush.

To hold a Mystikum bottle is to step into another era: a time when beauty was crafted by hand, and every object carried a story waiting to be discovered by those willing to listen.
