During the first half of the 20th century, the phenomenon of proxy marriages was common in Southern Italy. A young woman would be promised in marriage to an older man she had never met, an emigrant seeking fortune in distant lands. Groups of young women were gathered onto ships bound for unknown countries, torn away from their homeland and families. Often, the weddings were celebrated immediately upon arrival at the harbor. Éperdument tells the story of one of these young brides who leaves behind her beloved family, her homeland, and her unique heritage to meet a stranger much older than herself. Yet she is a fortunate woman, for she discovers the love of her life.
